Love for mums provides the safe monitoring of Mercy babies

Mercy Health Foundation is once again honouring mums at our Mother’s Day High Tea on Friday 10 May at Alto Events Space in Melbourne.

In 2023, the event raised enough funds to purchase two new cardiotocography (CTG) machines for Mercy Hospital for Women (MHW). Without the generous support of our community of donors supporting the 2023 event, we would not be able to help unborn babies in distress.

These machines allow midwives and obstetricians to monitor the wellbeing of unborn babies throughout pregnancy and during labour. Jackie Sacco, Deputy Divisional Director, Women’s and Children’s Services at MHW, says these machines help maternity staff monitor unborn babies safely.

“They are a vital piece of equipment in all our maternity units. We are replacing them very slowly due to the substantial cost of each CTG machine, approximately $20,000 each,” Jackie says.

CTG monitoring is used constantly in the Perinatal Fetal Monitoring Unit and in the Antenatal Inpatient Units for women throughout their pregnancy. In some high-risk cases, a CTG machine is used twice daily to monitor unborn babies.

“As a Tertiary referral hospital, the ability to provide CTG monitoring for women from all around Victoria assists directly in clinical decision making and better outcomes for mothers, babies and families,” Jackie says.

Thank you to everyone who supported this event in 2023 – without you we would not have been able to purchase these life-saving machines.

You can support the NICU again this year by booking your ticket to attend the 2024 Mother’s Day High Tea event! Amber Petty is our MC for the event and there will be unlimited sparkling wine, a silent auction and of course, a delicious high tea.
