Christmas elves bring big smiles, laughter and joy to aged care residents

Christmas is a time to celebrate and spread joy and cheer, so last Christmas Mercy Health Foundation enlisted the help of some enchanting elves to deliver gifts to every one of Mercy Health’s 2,500 aged care residents at 30 homes across four states.

The elves (local primary school students) brought smiles and plenty of festive cheer as they donned their elf hats, handed out gifts, connected with residents and sung carols at every home they attended.

Mercy Place East Melbourne Lifestyle Coordinator, Anna Pitcher, said the visit was the highlight of the December social calendar.

“The residents were completely surprised and cheered by the event, the “elves” brought new energy to the home, and they loved opening and checking out their presents just like Christmas morning,” Anna says.

The residents had the brightest smiles I had seen in a while! They looked really energised by the interaction and enjoyed chatting with the school children. It was heart-warming and life-affirming to observe”.

The Christmas Elves initiative was made possible thanks to the generosity of long-time supporters, O’Brien’s Pharmacy, who donated the gifts. It was a heartwarming gesture that brought joy to the residents, their families, and the students.

The initiative brightened up the holiday season and fostered a sense of community and connectedness between the young and old. The students learned the importance of giving back and the joy of spreading happiness, while the residents enjoyed the company, cheer, and carols.

“From the residents and all staff at Mercy Place, thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” says Anna.

It was an exceptional experience for everyone involved. We would like to extend our deep gratitude to O’Brien’s Pharmacy for their extraordinary kind donation and commitment to Mercy Health Foundation.

Thank you to all the primary schools who participated in the program and a special thank you to all the elves who made sure that every resident was able to join in the Christmas joy last year – we are humbled by your kindness and support.
