On Sunday 21 May, Rhiannon and Alex Hirschauer got together with family and friends to play nine holes of golf at Strathallan Golf Club in Bundoora. But, this wasn’t just a game of golf, this was the annual ‘Delilah Cup’.
Rhiannon was 17 weeks pregnant when she and Alex lost their baby Delilah in 2021. They were devastated by the loss, and although the experience was traumatic, they also said it was beautiful because of how the midwives at Mercy Hospital for Women (MHW) cared for them. “We were treated with kindness and respect, and given all the time we needed to be with our baby,” Rhiannon said.
In memory of Delilah, Rhiannon and Alex donated ‘Delilah’s Delights’, which included diffusers, oils, salt lamps and speakers to the birth suites at MHW to help improve the experience of everyone giving birth.
Every year they host the ‘Delilah Cup’ – a golf day to raise money for the birth suites at MHW. Around 30 keen golfers came out and played nine holes for a good cause and to remember Delilah. The weather was not looking favourable; the morning was cold and drizzly, but as the first golfer teed off, the clouds cleared, the rain stopped and the sun shone for the whole afternoon.
“It was a great day and we raised over $3,000. It was even more special because Sharon and Michelle came along too, two of the midwives who cared for us when we lost Delilah,” Alex said.
